Did you know you can give a nutritional punch to all your beverages just by adding grass?
I don’t mean grass from your yard, but rather Amazing Grass Green Superfood blends. If you keep up on health food trends, you may be familiar with the concept of green superfood blends and powders. If not, they are blends of nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables that you can mix with drinks.
They are not supposed to replace fresh fruits and vegetables, but are meant to be used as dietary supplements. You can think of them as a multivitamin that tastes good or as a boost of energy to help you through the day. They are also good insurance for those times when you can’t manage to eat all your fruits and vegetables for the day.
I have wanted to try a green superfood powder for a while now, for all the reasons above. Like a lot of people, I would like a boost of energy mid-afternoon without reaching for more coffee or sugary snacks. Also, I usually don’t have a problem eating enough fruits and vegetables, but it can be difficult when I am away from home. Green superfoods seem like the perfect solution for both these scenarios.
Amazing Grass Green Superfoods.
I was a bit apprehensive about trying a green superfood blend because the reviews are so mixed. Some people think they taste great, while others think they taste like grass. I decided to order the Amazing Grass Green Superfood Variety Pack: 10 count pack so I could try different flavors and find what I like. With ten different varieties, I figured this pack must have something I would enjoy.
Amazing Grass Green Superfood looked like an especially good choice because it has no sugar added and, as I would expect, is completely plant-based. It is also certified organic, gluten free, non GMO, and kosher. The ingredients include a special Amazing Grass antioxidant blend, a fiber blend, and a probiotic enzyme blend. If you think all this blending sounds suspicious, don’t worry. The complete list of ingredients is included on the packaging. Each serving includes 20-30 calories, less than one gram of sugar, one to two grams of fiber, and one to two grams of protein.
The variety pack includes ten flavors which are listed under four categories: Amazing Flavors, Green Energy, Cleanse and Detox, and Immunity Support. The sample pack includes ten single-serving packets. I expected to receive one of each flavor, but when I opened my box two flavors were missing and there was an extra of two other flavors. So, I will only be reviewing the eight flavors that I was sent. Keep reading to learn more about the different superfood blends and read my recommendations for how to use them.
The Amazing Flavors category, designed as a convenient way to get basic nutrients, is available in Original, Berry, and Chocolate flavors. I started by testing the Original, wanting to begin with the basics. For my taste test, I stirred about half of a packet into half a cup of water. It did not dissolve completely in water and had a slightly grainy texture. The flavor resembled green tea more than anything else I can think of, but I would not want to drink a whole cup of it. I also later tried it in a smoothie bowl, and I will discuss the results of that at the end of the article.
The next flavor I tested was Berry, and I liked it quite a bit better than the Original. I still noticed the earthy taste of the Original, but the berry flavor made it sweeter and more enjoyable.
Following recommendations in the product description on Amazon, I mixed the Chocolate blend with almond milk instead of water. I liked it overall, although the chocolate taste was not as strong as I had hoped for. (I am a big chocolate lover.) I also tried something else with the Chocolate blend; read to the end to find out what it was!
The Clean Energy blends, in refreshing Lemon-Lime and Watermelon flavors, contain 85 mg of caffeine from Yerba Mate and Matcha Green Tea. This is slightly less than the caffeine content of a cup of coffee. These Clean Energy blends are one way to get the energy boost of caffeine while taking in nutrients from whole foods at the same time.
Both of the Green Energy blends tasted great in ice water. The Watermelon and Lemon-Lime flavors seem to be the perfect complements to the blended greens flavor. I am now sipping on a bottle of iced Watermelon as I write, and it is giving me just enough energy to stay focused. This is a quick but healthy source of caffeine for when you don’t have time to prepare tea or coffee.
Cleanse and Detox.
The Cleanse and Detox blends are made with healthy digestion and the elimination of toxins in mind. The two varieties are Simply Pure, with 12 ingredients, herbs, and spices; and Clean Greens, with 24 ingredients and probiotics. I say varieties rather than flavors because both of the blends tasted the same as the Original. They evidently had additional ingredients, but not flavoring. That is fine, though, because I can still use them in smoothies.
The Immunity Support blends are meant to boost the immune system through a combination of the most nutrient-dense superfoods. The flavors are Antioxidant Sweet Berry, Immunity Tangerine, and Multivitamin Pineapple Lemongrass. The last two were the flavors that were missing from my order, so unfortunately I cannot comment on them.
I did enjoy the Antioxidant Sweet Berry blend mixed into ice water, though. As expected, it tasted like green tea, but with a slightly sweet berry flavor. It also includes 15,000 oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) units, which covers the recommended daily intake for antioxidants. That is a pretty good deal for a single refreshing beverage.
Making Amazing Grass more amazing.
Sampling the Amazing Grass Green Superfood Variety pack was an adventure. I have learned what I do and don’t like about superfood blends and how to use them for the best results.
Are you ready for the results of my Amazing Grass smoothie bowl experiment? Well, I actually loved it! For a small serving, I used two small bananas, ½ cup of soy milk, and half a packet of Amazing Grass, all mixed in a blender until smooth. I was very pleasantly surprised by how delicious this was. The sweetness and creaminess of the bananas made the greens blend much more palatable. The slight bitterness of the greens actually enhanced the smoothie bowl by preventing it from being too sweet. Lastly, the powder blended perfectly so there was no graininess or sludge left at the bottom.
I definitely will be making this again. A good smoothie bowl is one of my favorite breakfasts, so I am happy to have a new recipe. This is also a great way to get in some vegetables at the beginning of the day, which would be a big improvement for me.
This morning, I also decided to try something different with the Chocolate mix by blending it with a cup of freshly brewed coffee and ¼ cup of soy milk. The result was a mild, frothy beverage which I thoroughly enjoyed. The bitterness of the coffee seemed to bring out the chocolate flavor of the greens, while the soy milk helped the flavors blend together. Plus, although I could still detect the “grass” flavor, it actually tasted good to me in this combination. The beverage was a little more indulgent than my usual plain coffee, but not too rich to drink on a daily basis. I can see myself making it a part of my regular routine.
Note: If you try this, be careful about using piping hot coffee because it can cause a buildup of pressure inside the blender. To be safe, I blended my coffee after it had cooled down a bit and then reheated it afterward.
To summarize, the Berry, Watermelon, Lemon-Lime, and Sweet Berry stand fine on their own mixed with water. I prefer them cold over ice. The Chocolate mix is good with plant-based milk or coffee. The Original and Cleanse and Detox blends are best in a smoothie, smoothie bowl, or something else that can disguise their flavor. I will experiment more in the future and try to come up with new recipes.
